Resume Writing Tips for Career Growth and Advancement

Resume Writing Tips for Career Growth and AdvancementWriting a resume for career growth and advancement requires a different approach than simply writing a resume for a similar position or horizontal move. Showing the employer the tangible benefits youve delivered becomes increasingly more important as you position yourself for growth either within your company or outside of it. Here are a few resume tips to help you position yourself for advancement and growth.Tips for How to Write a Resume for Career Growth or Advancement1.) Know Where You Want to Go.Carefully consider where you want your career to go over the next few years. Without a clear imagination of what you want to do, youre leid going to be able to successfully communicate that to employers. I suggest you start by asking yourself where you want to be this time next year or in two years or five. You may already know the position you want and the steps you need to take to get there. If so, great But if youre not clear on tho se things here are some questions to helpWhy do you do the work that you do?What values are the driving force behind your work? What part of your current work do you enjoy and what are you passionate about?Answering these questions can help you frame a vision for your future. It will also help you formulate your answers in upcoming interviews when youre asked why youre interested in the position or the company.2.) Use Visuals to Present Results. You can add testimonials to your resume to incorporate third-party validation of your results. Use a chart to highlight skill areas or industry expertise. Use bar charts to show revenue growth, customer satisfaction score increases or some other type of number-driven data that shows youve delivered tangible results. Visuals communicate information faster and more attractively than simple text. Incorporating visuals into your resume help show progression and growth in your career and set you up for advancement.3.) Write Your Resume for Applican t Tracking Systems. When you apply for jobs online, you want to make your application attractive to applicant tracking systems (ATS). Write your resume specifically for the position youre seeking. Use keywords throughout the resume that are relevant for the position. Especially include them in the Key Competencies or Areas of Expertise sections. Use specific technical skills or job responsibilities as keywords in your resume instead of just general words like full-time or team player. Make an ATS version of your resume that does not include any graphics, charts, etc. Also, use a .doc file for your online application to preserve formatting, not .docx or PDF.Additionally, you can use a free word cloud creator online to find which skills are mentioned most in a particular job post. Then use those words as keywords in your resume. By paying close attention to how to optimize your resume for ATS, you can avoid your resume being among the 75 percent of resumes that are ignored before they ever even make it to a hiring managers desk.4.) Put Your Best Stuff at the Top.Put your LinkedIn profile link by your name and contact information at the top of the resume. Update your LinkedIn profile, and make it as strong as possible to show that youre a solid candidate for the positions youre applying to.Avoid objective statements, instead write a targeted statement with metrics. Those metrics speak to employers about why youre the right person to hire.Include industry- and position-specific keywords in a separate section at the top of the resume. Eye-tracking studies have proven that recruiters are paying great attention to this section so what you put here will help position you well for advancement.5.) Avoid Too Much Fluff. While its important to let the employer know that youre a team player, you dont want to overstuff your resume with fluffy descriptions of your soft skills. While these are definitely essential to a position, employers want to know what hard skills you posse ss. ansicht hard skills also end up being the buzz words employers use when they search applicant tracking systems to pull candidate resumes. Write your resume to reflect what you can actually do on the job, how you can tangibly benefit the employer. Use numbers to help validate the tangible results that youve delivered. Its not very impactful to say youre results-driven its better to state what results youve created and to use numbers to quantify those results.6.) Tell Your Story.Use results of your successes on the job to tell employers how you are the right person to hire. Think about some challenges that you have had on the job and how you overcame them. Then consider the results of those actions. First, write down the result of the problem. For example, you might say, Landed 3 new lucrative accounts worth $1 million. Then discuss how you reached those results. You could write, Developed rapport with competitors clients, instilling trust and confidence resulting in new contracts worth $1M. Finally, write what the problem was in the beginning. That might be, Competitor-led territory where XYZ company had no presence. Put this information into bullet points to succinctly tell your story on your resume. This helps you avoid writing a long list of adjectives that dont directly tell an employer how you can help them increase their bottom line. When you put all the information together, youre painting a great picture for the employer of how you charged headfirst into competitor territory, developed great rapport with your competitors clients, built trust, instilled confidence in the companys products, and ultimately won three new contracts worth $1M in new business for your employer.7.) Create a Modern Resume Design. The overall design of your resume should be modern and clean, essentially unlike any other resume out there. Avoid using too many capitals, bold, and italics in your text. Stay away from Times New Roman font its overused and not attractive to the eye. For examples of modern resume design check out the resume samples here.Telling a complete but concise story that shows measurable results is essential to your career progression. If this article was helpful to you, please share I enjoy networking feel free to send me an invitation on LinkedIn.

Parents Save & Spend More On Sons College Education Than Daughters

Parents Save & Spend More On Sons College Education Than Daughters We know that unconscious bias plagues women in the workplace but we hear less about how it affects young children. This week, though, a Wall Street Journal report revealed some disturbing news two recent financial-industry polls suggest that families save more for boys college education than they do for girls. One study by T. Rowe Price from earlier this year looked at households with all boys and homes with all girls.Fifty percent of the boy-only families had money saved for college, where just 39 percent of girl-only households had money saved. Boy-only families also contributed to their childrens college savings more frequently than girl-only households.A separate study by LendEDU found that while 10 percent of men had their higher education paid for by their parents, only 6 percent of women said their parents paid for a majority of college. 50 percent of women said their parents paid for none of their education.Pa rents should give a good hard look and make sure they are treating their children fairly and recognizing the potential of both their boys and their girls, Roger Young, a senior financial planner at T. Rowe Price said to The Wall Street Journal. We certainly see in society more broadly there are gaps between incomes of men and women. While women have a greater likelihood of going to (and graduating from) college, the way parents prepare for their education has a significant impact on a students financial life. A recent analysis by the American Association of University Women found that women typically have larger student loans than men.The struggles of college graduates with student debt can be significant, the AAUW study reads. Women especially women of color are fruchtwein likely to experience difficulties 34 percent of all women and 57 percent of black women who were repaying student loans reported that they had been unable to meet essential expenses within the past year.Because of the gender pay gap, women tend to pay back these debts slower than their male counterparts. Saving for higher education as soon as possible, even if it starts with miniscule amounts, can greatly impact womens educational and professional futures.Educational consultant Steven Roy Goodman says that parents expectations of their children can both consciously and unconsciously affect how they prepare for their childs future. There is really no way to say this subtly the parents had different life expectations for their sons and daughters. Goodman told The Wall Street Journal, referencing a specific client. They perceived that the young women were not going to have 40-year-careers in the ways they expected their sons to have.Shereem Herndon-Brown, a former college admissions director and founder of Strategic Admissions Advice LLC, has witnessed a similar trend. He told The Wall Street Journal that he has seen parents push their daughters to lower-cost schools because they dont believe shell recoup the costs of her investment.I dont think parents are going to admit to their 18-year-old daughter that they dont want to pay as much for her education because they are thinking 10 years down the road to her wedding, Brown said. Its an unfortunate reality.Despite the persisting bias and whatever reasoning is behind it, parents need to recognize that their college savings decisions have long-term effects on their childrens lives. Girls need just as much financial support as boys, especially when it comes to preparing for the future.

Why we should get rid of generational labels in the workplace

Why we should get rid of generational labels in the workplaceWhy we should get rid of generational labels in the workplaceMany people seem determined to group all millennials into a single box, which seems a little unimaginative at best, considering demographers cant even unilaterally agree on what exactly constitutes a millennial.Whatever you call this group, theres no denying the fact that millennials have a tremendous effect on the way we all work - but then again, so do the generations that came before and after. The real challenge is to find meaningful lessons beyond descriptors based on age.Heres why generational labels can cause problems in the workplace and how we should think about age at work instead.Labels are open for misinterpretationPeople have long lumped members of generations together, said Phyllis Weiss Haserot, president of Practice Development Counsel, who specializes in intergenerational work relationships. It makes for good media stories with a lot of misinterp retations and misunderstanding. A fascinating article on NPR on the naming of generationscredits historian William Strauss and his co-author the late Neil Howe for naming and referencing the group starting with those who graduated high school in 2000 in their books The History of Americas Future, 1584 to 2069 and Millennials Rising The Next Great Generation. One problemwith this (in addition to the fact that everyone is an individual) is that the older and younger halves of each generation are different from each other because of different formative economic, political, social and cultural influences, Haserot said. This means you might have micro-groups within groups. Some younger Boomers even created their own name, Generation Jones (a reference to the phrase keeping up with the Joneses), Haserot said. They are self-fulfillingIf you assume millennials have no work ethic, you wont give them meaningful responsibilities and hence youll never be impressed by any one individual, thus confi rming the label, saidWes Higbee, President, Full City Tech Co.How can we go beyondlabels on a daily basis? Higbee said he evaluates his own biases.I might assume that millennials dont take notlagees and dont listen well in meetings, and so I spend half an hour typing up notes after every meeting, he said. Maybe the reality is I have a few lackadaisical employees, and I can work with them to be more responsible - or just get rid of them - instead of labeling all young people as lazy and wasting hours every week typing up notes. They ignore individual differencesTim Elmore, president of Growing Leaders, a nonprofit global leadership training and development organization, refers to those born since 1990 as Generation iY and describes them as having a plugged-in lifestyle and wanting immediate gratification. He said that the generations who came before can help teach them how to builda healthy sense of interdependence- not a narcissistic independence or needy co-dependence.Help them to develop personal values, he said. They must see themselves as individuals who possess a set of values, but who collaborate with other generations. That may include helping them to make and keep short-term commitments, working with them to simplify their lives beyond the pursuit of perfection, and enabling them to set realistic goals. You will find they often possess lofty dreams, and they need help turning them into bite-size objectives with deadlines, he said. Dont rain on their parade- just help them take realistic steps, one at a time, toward their target. Encourage them to set short-term goals that are achievable and keep momentum toward the long-term goal. They isolate employeesHelene Cruz, Director of Career Counseling at Pace University Career Services, said she isproud that her team is multi-generational.We have established a culture that cultivates learning from one another across seven generations, she said. We appreciate our millennial colleagues and rely on the fact that t hey are technically-savvy and creative, ready to bring new ideas to the table and not afraid to embark on new initiatives. All employees, no matter their age, contribute to the organization, Cruz said.We glean a tremendous amount of insight from our millennial teammates because they are closer in age to the students and can more fully express the student perspective/experience, she said.In turn, because employer representatives are also our clients, many Baby Boomers and Gen X staff have previously worked in various industries, have hired employees, and therefore can speak to the needs of the employers, which we share with our millennial teammates. The focus should not be on how generations differ, but on how they can work together, Cruz said.Establish environments where they interact with multiple generations, she said.Highlight the strengths of people at different ages in life, and how each person adds value. Find or create situations where different generations can interact mean ingfully.
